Everybody knows who Andrés Segovia was; to a lesser extent, also the memory of the great Spanish conductor Ataulfo Argenta (1913-1958) is surrounded of respect. Among his many achievements, he was the man who made famous the “Concierto de Aranjuez” outside Spain, firstly with Regino Sainz de la Maza and then with Narciso Yepes. Segovia and Argenta once cooperated for a most beatiful performance of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco “Concerto in Re for Guitar and Orchestra op. 99”. That glorious event took place at Luzern (Switzerland) on August 17th, 1955 for the Internationalen Musikfestwoken organized by the Luzern Radio, whose orchestra worked at the orders of the Spanish conductor. Argenta and Segovia did a really marvelous work: I can say this, because – due to the courtesy of a friend who is acquainted with the archives of the Swiss broadcasting company – yesterday I was able to listen to the recording of that concert. Incredible! I shake my hat to the memory of those two great interpreters and, of course, to the memory of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco: I never listened before to such a marvel!
Tutti sanno chi fu Andrés Segovia; meno nota, oggi, sebbene rispettatissima, è la memoria del grande direttore d’orchestra Ataulfo Argenta (1913-1958). Tra i suoi molti meriti, va annoverato l’ apporto determinante che egli diede alla diffusione del “Concierto de Aranjuez” fuori dalla Spagna, prima con Regino Sainz de la Maza e poi con Narciso Yepes. Segovia e Argenta collaborarono per una splendida esecuzione del “Concerto in Re per chitarra e orchestra” di Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Quel glorioso evento ebbe luogo a Lucerna il 17 agosto 1955 per l’Internationalen Musikfestwoken organizzato da Radio Lucerna, la cui orchestra fu diretta nell’occasione da Argenta. Lui e Segovia fecero un lavoro meraviglioso: posso dirlo perché – grazie alla cortesia di un amico che ha accesso agli archivi della radio in questione – ieri ho potuto ascoltare la registrazione di quel concerto. Incredibile! Mi levo il cappello alla memoria dei due grandi interpreti e, naturalmente, alla memoria di Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco: non avevo mai ascoltato siffatta meraviglia!
